I think your best bet would be to try to hire on with a contractor. Learning by doing is a lot better than book learning.

Not only is the Habitat for Humanity an excellent suggestion, there are trade schools that specialize in building maintenance, as for which schools in your area provide this, is something you’ll have to do some leg-work and check them out yourself.
