Where do you get someone to do remodel work?
Girl Squirrel asked:
I hear nightmare stories from many people who have been in remodel hell, I want to avoid it, well as much as possible. I want new shower stalls put in the bathrooms, carpets removed and pergo put in 3-5 rooms. Painting the outside of the house and putting on ledge stone facade on the outside. We live in the Anaheim, CA area.

Talk to someone from your local remodelers association or a member of NARI. Whomever you talk to get references when they come to give estimates and call the references. Never pay up front for work, put down a third at the beginning, a third half way through and the rest on completion to your satisfaction.

YOUR STATE HAS LICENSING FOR THESE TRADES - BUT THEY ARE AN OVERWORKED AND UNDER RESPONSIVE LOT SO GET ON THE INTERNET (OR CALL DIRECT )THAT BOARD FOR TIPS AND TO CHECK THE RECORD OF SOMEONE YOU FIND THROUGH ADVERTISING. THE LOCAL PAINT STORE COULD PROBABLY GIVE YOU THE NAMES OF THEIR BIGGEST CUSTOMERS - OR ONES THAT DO WHAT YOU WANT DONE. SAME ADVISE FOR THE TILE SETTER - AND THE CARPET OR FLOORING CONTRACTOR. AROUND HERE HOME DEPOT AND LOWES WILL SELL INSTALLATION WITH THE ITEMS YOU BUY THERE.

If you have any local lumber yards–as I do–if they sell paint and carpet and such–they usually can give you names of their good customers who work in the field and have a good name or reputation. Ask neighbors–if you know any–local people. I think that I would get it by word of mouth rather than adds in the paper. Good luck

As a contractor, I personally get all of my business through word of mouth from my past and present customers. I don’t advertise at all, even in the yellow pages. Talk to your friends and co-workers to see if they have a contractor that they have used before and were satisfied with. The builders association typically will not recommend a contractor because they represent ALL of the builder/contractors and it would be a conflict of interest. Plus, even if a contractor didn’t have the best of reputations, they wouldn’t risk losing an associate member that paid dues. The same would apply at lumber yards, etc. They want to sell materials and will not risk the loss of business by favoring one contractor over the others. The BBB can only report on matters that have been reported. Unfortunately, the majority of people never got to the BBB to write a complaint, so they would not have an info to share on a perspective contractor. So again, ask around and find someone that has already tested the proverbial remodeling waters for you. Good luck.
